book-burning memorial Berlin, Germany
This memorial is located in the middle of a square called Babelplatz across from the Humboldt University in the centre of Berlin. It marks the spot where the first major Nazi book-burning took place in May of 1933. A transparent window lays, flush with the cobblestones, and reveals a stark white room with empty bookshelves. There are no stone statues and no plaques of explanation to accompany it, just the room acting as a quiet and ever present reminder of what once happened in that place.
